Younes Rahmoun: Here, Now  is the first survey for multidisciplinary artist Younes Rahmoun. Born in 1975 in Tetouan, Morocco, where he continues to live and work, Rahmoun is a leading figure in contemporary art internationally as well as a dedicated mentor and teacher to subsequent generations of artists in Morocco.

The exhibition explores how Rahmoun’s artistic practice has, since the 1990s, created space for viewers to be in community, together in the here and now, through a focus on formal rigor, iterative processes, and social engagements. Foremost among the exhibition’s themes are nature, place, and landscape; spirituality; migration as a consequence of de/colonization; and art as a premise for coming together. The exhibition invests in multiple locations across Smith: SCMA’s galleries and atrium façade, the Botanic Garden of Smith College, the banks of Paradise Pond, and the MacLeish Field Station in Whately, MA. New site-specific commissions will be exhibited at these locations alongside a selection of major sculptures, drawings, videos, and installations that Rahmoun has made over the past twenty-five years.

Inspired by the artist’s commitment to working collaboratively and creating connections across multiple locations, two partner exhibitions—at La Kunsthalle Mulhouse and Kulte: Center for Contemporary Art & Editions—will open in Mulhouse, France, and Rabat, Morocco, respectively, in 2024.

Utilisant avec la voix comme médium, les œuvres réagissent à la fonte du glacier Folgefonna, aux bouleversements climatiques, ainsi qu’à notre quête de sens face à l’incertitude et au passé. La pièce majeure de l’exposition est A series of personal questions addressed to the Folgefonna glacier, une œuvre commandée spécialement pour l’occasion. L’exposition se conclura avec Glacial Feelings, une conférence tentant de faire émerger une forme de clarté face à la catastrophe climatique en cours, avec des interventions de glaciologues, d’artistes et de psychologues.

À partir du 5 février, les vingt-quatre vitrines du Passage de la Bourse de Commerce accueillent les œuvres du cinéaste et sculpteur Ali Cherri. En investissant les vitrines – dispositif muséal par excellence – et la circularité de la Bourse de Commerce, son œuvre se réfère au cinéma et à ses vingt-quatre images par seconde : flashes fantomatiques entre le réel et la fiction, le passé et le présent.

Rassemblant les œuvres de 40 artistes internationaux, l’exposition Après la fin – cartes pour un autre avenir, sous le commissariat de Manuel Borja-Villel, cherche à remettre en question le récit occidental ancré dans un système colonial à travers des récits nouveaux et ancestraux, populaires et modernes. Soulignant l’importance des communautés, l’exposition s’organise autour de réflexions qui interrogent la diaspora et les limites de l’intelligibilité de la modernité afin d’imaginer d’autres mondes au-delà de la fin des temps, au-delà de notre propre temps.

A textile with vibrant colors and varied patterns, wax fabric is instantly recognizable. Often perceived as « African, » this fabric has stood the test of time and crossed borders. For over a decade, its popularity has been unprecedented in Western societies—clothing, accessories, home decor… Wax fabric is becoming increasingly present in homes and wardrobes. Yet, its unique history remains largely unknown.

How is motherhood shaped by politics, history and migration? How do war, displacement and inheritance affect the relationship between mothers, children and society?

The exhibition is kaleidoscope of perspectives: from personal memory and embodied practice to colonial histories and institutional critique, and from the technological mediation of care to centuries-old ritual objects that have crossed borders and epochs.

Conçue comme un dialogue imaginaire entre le fleuve Charente et les rivières de São Paulo comme le Tietê, qui parcourent respectivement les territoires du Frac Poitou-Charentes (Angoulême) et de l’Instituto Tomie Ohtake (São Paulo) où elle sera successivement présentée, l’exposition rassemble les oeuvres de douze artistes français et brésiliens.

À l’ère du changement climatique, les oeuvres présentées explorent les thèmes de la pénurie d’eau, de la relation de l’eau avec les histoires coloniales et extractivistes, des questions d’infrastructure et des futurs possibles. « Eaux souterraines : récits en confluence » donne à voir des pratiques artistiques qui reconnaissent les cours d’eau comme des êtres vivants dotés de droits intrinsèques, mais aussi en tant que témoins ancestraux, participants de l’histoire humaine, porteurs de transformations et de rencontres.

Comment imaginer nos milieux de vie dans un monde confronté à autant de bouleversements planétaires et de défis écologiques ? Réalisme magique : Imaginer la nature en dés/ordre réunit, à WIELS et ailleurs, une trentaine d’artistes dont Minia Biabiany apportant des idées et points de vue nouveaux sur notre rapport à la planète.

L’exposition est une invitation à rompre avec des systèmes fondés sur la croissance infinie et l’extraction sans limites de ressources, et à re-tisser des liens avec notre biosphère et les réseaux complexes qui la constituent.

The exhibition How I Am Monument looks at history through a material lens. Cherri’s recent mud-based sculptures take inspiration from archaeological artefacts and the natural world. Relics, sourced from auctions and antique markets, are grafted onto mud bodies to create hybrid beings. Cherri uses mud as both a material and a metaphor for creation. His video installation Of Men and Gods and Mud (2022) further explores mud’s creative power.

For more than two decades, Baloji has been exploring the complex interplay of cultural identity, colonial history, and industrial exploitation within his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo. His work is an ongoing research on the cultural, architectural and industrial heritage of the contested and resource-rich region of Katanga (in the South East of the country), as well as critically examining the impact of Belgian colonisation.

Baloji’s solo exhibition at EMΣΤ entitled Echoes of History, Shadows of Progress brings together installations, video works, and photographic series from the past twelve years of the artist’s practice, including a new commission. The exhibition highlights Baloji’s artistic research on the history, present-day reality and contradictions inherent in the formation of Congo.
