Notre présentation est consacrée aux œuvres de Sammy Baloji et Ali Cherri, qui ont tous deux bénéficié récemment d’une importante reconnaissance institutionnelle au Royaume-Uni. En effet, des œuvres majeures de Sammy Baloji ont été récemment acquises par la Tate Modern et le département de photographie du Victoria & Albert Museum tandis qu’Ali Cherri est actuellement artiste en résidence à la National Gallery et travaille sur une prochaine exposition personnelle à la Herbert Art Gallery & Museum de Coventry. Tous deux réfléchissent aux significations politiques, sociales et économiques des collections et de la taxonomie des musées.
Les nouvelles œuvres de Sammy Baloji poursuivant les lignes thématiques développées notamment depuis sa participation à la documenta14 et sa résidence à la Villa Médicis : un examen approfondi de l’histoire coloniale, une attention à l’appareillage institutionnel et muséal qui assure intelligibilité et visibilité aux artefacts provenant de territoires anciennement colonisés du Sud global, et une histoire de la collecte d’objets et de l’exploitation des ressources naturelles au Congo.
Les sculptures d’Ali Cherri s’inscrivent quant à elles à la suite des recherches de l’artiste sur l’hybridation et l’assemblage, principes perfectionnés en empruntant la pratique de la greffe aux domaines de la botanique et de la médecine. Ici, plus spécifiquement, il convoque des figures inspirées du règne animal, du monde aquatique et d’êtres de fiction monstrueux.
