Chapter 2: Songs from the Shore
With: Tania Candiani, Carolina Caycedo, Marianne Fahmy, Clara Jo et Thao Nguyen Phan
Curated by Martina Sabbadini
The second chapter of the exhibition Songs from the Shore brings together works by artists from different geographical origins who explore our relationship with water.
There was a time when the vastness of the sea conjured a sense of eternity. We were small, the sea was vast, and our mistakes could be washed away by its waves or simply drowned, dissolved into the immensity of the ocean. But we grew big. Through industrial revolutions, we unleashed forces that have quickly transformed the relation between bodies of water and the communities surrounding them. Now, water is increasingly becoming both scarce and tragically overabundant.
Through an intimate perspective and skilfully juggling between reality and fiction, the works presented in this edition of The Video Fortnight invite us to rethink our relationship to water and ecological threats such as landscape transformation, pollution, overfishing, circulation of water-borne epidemics and the disappearance of certain activities or traditions related to water.
The first chapter of Songs from the Shore was presented at the Imane Farès gallery from 15 February to 7 March 2023. With the artists : Monira Al Qadiri, Seba Calfuqueo, Manthia Diawara, Christine Rebet, Emilija Skarnulyte, Sriwhana Spong.
